gentoo has never broken for me. it's got portage - very fast releases, very clean, slow - it compiles the sources for every program you install - optimized
fedora core looked nice. It played doom3. Yeah. yum isn't too great. ubuntu is nice. debian-based, relatively stable, but still keeps you away from your linux. everything else is poopy in terms of package management - the one thing that separates distros gentoo is very fast, clean, easy to comprehend (learning maybe not so much...). I'd go for ubuntu first if you're not a linux dude, then switch to gentoo when you feel more comfortable.

It took me over about 6 tries over a year to get gentoo set up right. Each time I tried I learned more and more...it's a gradual thing - you can't learn everything out there overnight...but the time spent learning has well paid off...gentoo + e17 owns j00...

If you beginner - I think for you best change will be Ubuntu or Mandriva. Gentoo some hard in tuning and install, but if you now about RTFM you can understand & fix all problems, which will be on your linux-way
