I am far from Linux's biggest fan and even I'll say that you should try it. It can't hurt any

The first rule of Linux is: Don't talk about Linux.

Yes, you should try it. But a legitimate try, none of those 30-minute click-arounds.
Get some experience so that: 1. You can understand what others are talking about 2. You know more and can do more 3. You don't end up like the poor windozers who like to criticize or just generally talk without having any experience whatsoever outside of windows

It it wasn't for the fact that Creative's drivers for Linux are a steaming pile of crap and don't support S/PDIF passthrough or DTS encoding I would be running Arch x64 during the week for daily tasks, music, and HD video, then booting to Vista x64 on the weekend for gaming.
Alas this isn't the case, so my main rig runs Vista x64, while my wife's rig and my netbook run Arch. Gaming aside, Linux is vastly superior to all other OSes (IMO.) If you can dream it up it can be done, as long as you have to knowledge or the patience to learn. I would say if you want to truly learn Linux and be proficient I would grab a minimalist distro like Arch, Slackware, or Gentoo and get a guide for it. This way you will learn about Linux from the ground up, and won't have to just copy/paste text into the console from forums. You will learn how to configure every file in /etc and elsewhere, and you will most likely learn a thing or two about networking and programming, etc. You will be inclined to learn about shell scripting, editing/creating makefiles, etc. These skills are great if you work or are planning to work in a computer related field. Now if you just want to try one to get your feet wet and not dive right in, then I would get Ubuntu, Linux Mint, openSUSE, or maybe Fedora (though it's a little more advanced than Ubuntu.) Quote:

It suggested Gentoo, Zenwalk, and Slackware. No Arch It still suggested even though I didn't select 'I prefer to compile my own binaries'...I selected 'other package management' (pacman FTW, yum a close second.)I've never heard of Zenwalk..........maybe I should check it out.

And as he suggest get a "tougher" OS and start to learn as you go. You will get frustrated but just like any episode of G.I. Joe there is a lesson to learn. Gentoo (I love watching text!) Arch Linux (McDonald's!) Slackware (if you can do Arch you can do Slack) LFS (if you're nuts) Zenwalk (if you like XFCE) Puppy Linux (fits in all overhead storage) FreeBSD (/etc/rc.conf get to know it) Just a few "advanced" distro's to look at. EDIT: What I think happens with a lot of people is they get too comfortable in a auto distro like Ubuntu/Fedora/OpenSUSE/Mint and never want to break free. I think its great what these OS' have done for the community in bringing people over but I just wish they showed the CLI more. Also look at other format choices other then just ext I personally use JFS on my laptop because its less CPU intensive then the others plus it was built with journaling vs it being an add on. pink

If what I said was less than accurate, why don't you go ahead and address that?

I don't quite understand how you are having so many problems with Windows. I admit sometimes it's a bit unstable, but I'm thinking it's a hardware/user end problem. Windows should run any current game fine (and any old game, given a few modifications) without any crashes, as long as the devs update the game with patches and you have said patches installed.
__________________I'm not going to ask how you paid for all those copies of windows (those ways could be the reason for the crashing), but try to stick to one (windows 7 RC dl'd from microsoft will work) and modify and make it fit your needs. Windows isn't as versatile as linux, but it's not solid concrete either.

I think I'm gonna give Ubuntu a try on dual boot.
I want a change, but I'm disappointed that Linux distro's don't have full support for games.

More like games don't have full support for Linux.

if you have an ATI card I wouldn't go with Linux, video feels likes your on a ATI Rage all over again with the horrible stutters with the prop drivers for it.
Nvidia on the other hand is suppose to have good Linux drivers.
