and ATI has made major strides to change that as of late. Plus, nVidia keeps all their hardware specs private, where ATI isn't.

You just gotta give em some time to get it right.

I can overlook the gaming aspect of Linux but not being able to view video's correctly is a huge thing.

Linux is beyond great for being free, but after your use to Windows its hard to accept something that is totally different.

I sort of understand Bill Gates argument now, people have to get paid to make great quality software.

People *do* get paid to develop Linux software. Most people seem to forget that.

Can you pay somebody to write a driver for my video card?

BTW it's a complicated and involved process to write a video driver

There should already be drivers for your video card (assuming it's the one in your sig).

It's also a complicated and involved process to write an entire operating system, but it was done by the FOSS community.

Ati have made huge leaps and bounds with their drivers. You can actually play game son it now

Their latest driver 9.6 was supposed to correct any video problems AFAIK. Now that I think about it, I can't remember if its 9.6 or their 9.7 release thats meant to correct it...

will try find documentation

EDIT: A quick google later

I got one thing to say: DO EET!!

If you want to dual boot, the easiest and safest way would have to be Wubi (Windows Ubuntu Installer). Download ubuntu, burn it to a disc, then run the disc in windows. Select "install ubuntu inside of windows" select 30GB of hard drive space (if you can spare it), put in a user name and password, then click install. Once the installer is done, you will be asked to reboot. Do so, then arrow down to Ubuntu and let it finish installing.

DONE! (well after you install the drivers (which is really easy), flash, java, etc... and the updates.)

Talking Yes go Ubuntu

Yes. I would suggest you start off with Ubuntu, currently one of the most popular flavors. Anyone who says gaming is only for windows is an idiot. I currently play CS:S / COD 4/ WOW/ C&C generals/ Crysis all on Ubuntu using wine. It has come a long way and games VERY playable now with a little configuring. Plus Compiz fusion destroys windows AERO as a desktop manager.

Ok I wouldn't go filling his head with ideas that Linux is a viable gaming platform, because it's not anywhere near that. Sure wine has come a long way, but the driver support for high end sound cards and certain video cards just isn't there yet.
Not to mention that most games you run will have a performance hit running in Linux. If you're going to game then stay in Windows.........there is no sense in limiting your gaming experience by refusing to run Windows.

I would really like to see results of you running Crysis in Linux with an 8600GTS...........
