I have tried W7, been accepting as a father is to a long lost child, as if it had finally come back to me, but it's still in it's premature stages (ie, it doesn't run all applications and games I want >:[). And XP has been a beautiful, hot piece of ass that I can't help but touch...but I constantly get crashes, viruses, errors, restarts, etc...what could I expect from such a whore? :3
I have tried Linux before, it was Ubuntu, and I admit, it was fun. I mean FUN, fun. I had only known ****ty mac and barely tolerable windows before, but now? Now was something new, and interesting. There were new programs, new browsers, new ways to do things, everything new to explore. It was exciting.

:0

But then, I found....DEATH. As much as I love the computer, and I love building them and working on them and spending hundreds of dollars on them...I'm still in highschool. What do I need a HAF 932 case with a 9800GTX+ GPU and a 700watt PSU for?

GAMINGGGGGG.

Although I haven't been able to play very many games due to constant OS failures (For the past few months I've been playing around with OS's, installing several W7s, XPs, etc). While most people were trying to figure out if they wanted Vista or XP, I was busy creating a system that would boot up with XP Professional, XP Media Center Edition, Vista, and W7. I had it all. Except that having so many OS's, using old backup CDs from old laptops, they weren't exactly...stable.

So I havent really been able to find a OS that can:

a)Allow me to install a game on it(without crashing)
b)Allow me to open a game on it(without crashing)
c)Allow me to play a game on it(without crashing)

Because of this, the only PC games I've ever played were Red Alert 3 (ew) COD4 Campaign (ONLINE DIDNT WORK???) CODWAW(decent game...) some Oblivion (Been there, done that on the PS3, nothing new) and Need For Speed Carbon (somewhat fun game....except I've already beat it before...)

So now I'm stuck with a system that has several unstable OS's and several boring games. I'm too scared to try and download another version of XP and try, for the next 30hours, to install it, download games, and play them, only to see they don't work, OR go out and buy an awesome game, then come home to see it won't play on W7. (I did this with Timeshift...=[)

So, linux people, I ask you...Should I try Linux? Or do I need to suck it up and spend $100+ on a new copy of Windows XP?
Ok, I'm not even going to begin suggesting that you run linux if you can't even setup a stable machine with windows. It doesn't matter if your disc is old or whatever--all of this makes no sense. You had 4 versions of windows running at the same time and couldn't get any of them stable? I don't even see how that is possible unless you power supply sucks, your RAM is shaky, your motherboard has blown caps AND the fan on your video card isn't spinning.

The OS is not your problem, my friend.

Not to mention that most games you run will have a performance hit running in Linux. If you're going to game then stay in Windows.........there is no sense in limiting your gaming experience by refusing to run Windows.

I would really like to see results of you running Crysis in Linux with an 8600GTS...........
Linux is most certainly a viable gaming platform, especially with OpenGL games. All of those games are quite playable. I'll give you Crysis FPS sits in the 15 - 18 range when there is any sort of action so it is rough, but i imagine with more current hardware it would likely be more playable. Most games play in the 60 fps range a majority of the time. If your a Unreal Tournament guy linux has it's own installer for the game and can run natively with performance that rivals and often supersedes windows. I wouln't suggest the switch to linux if you are in the ATI camp as ATI linux drivers are complete trash. Sound car drivers in linux do take quite a bit of configuration but are not that daunting of a task. For most games most flavors of linux have decent out of the repository ability.

Windows is still so much more practical for gaming than Linux. If you want to try it in Linux just to get the experience, that's understandable. If you want it to work in Linux so that you don't have to reboot if you want to play a game, that's understandable. Other than that, I can't understand going out of one's way to run games (windows games, that is) on Linux.

Yes OpenGL games will run fine in Linux provided you don't have an X-Fi sound card, but I can count the number of openGL games that I own on 2 hands and there are 0 that I currently play.
There are many sound cards that have great ALSA drivers (C-media oxygen IIRC), however X-Fi based cards are horrendous thanks to Creative and their delayed release of source code combined with a very complicated chip.

When it doesn't just crash outright, I get absolutely no sound. When it DOES crash outright, it can't be restarted again until I reboot the box. Oh well.
