Could you explain the Symatic installs for me?

Also I have decided that I want to run linux perminatly on my 2nd rig. Which version is the best? Also can I use aol instant messenging through a program for linux? I'm getting excited.

Synaptic is a gui front-end for apt-get, the backbone of debian, a very very famed distro.
I'd run tuxracer to give them a laugh. If you want to surprise them go with ubuntu + e17: the best looking wm out there - but knoppix would be easiest to demonstrate - pop it in, boot. Voila.

You can show them around the command line...

To create an install disc with the Ubuntu, should I just burn an Iso image on a cd-r, then boot from that and install?

I have about a week to get familar with things and get awesome games. So I'll keep you posted. I'm excited about joining the linux clan.

Yes. Burn the image to a CD-R, and then reboot your computer with the CD in your optical drive.

I should also note that I am using D-link pci wireless internet card (has an antenna, no cables). When I ran Knoppix it did not install drivers for it or something and I could not get on the internet.

Is there anything I should know about connecting to a wireless encrypted network? It runs from a pc upstairs with xp, not that makes much of a diff I suppose.
