Default ?'s for Linux Guys

I have to create a lesson plan for my ITGS class (Information Technology in a Global Society) about Linux.

I want to install Linux on an old HDD to show to the class, most people have no clue what it is.

First I need a place where I can get a good clean download of Linux that is FREE. It does not need to have many features, just a simple version that is quick to install would be good.

Second, what programs and stuff should I get to demonstrate it? What should I know about the actual operating system, installing process etc.?

Reps for any good info!!!

Knoppix is the easiest, it just boots right off the cd, hard drive install is optional.

Rep, Thanks, I'll try those out.

I am still curious if there are any software demonstration things I could do.

Well, the fact that everything installs through Symantic (spelling?) is good/big difference from windows.

Also demonstrate that in order to change restricted files, you need to login as root everytime, unlike windows where once you are in as an admin, anybody can change your system files around.
