IBM Lotus Symphony is another office competitor for at least three versions of Linux. Haven't used it much yet, but it looks good.

Thanks,

To be honest, I'm only interested in free stuff - Linux is free (for the most part), and a vast amount of the software for it is too. I look at this from a commerical software vs. open source, rather than a Windows/Mac vs. Linux list.

yea it's best to only list the free applications mate or label what ones are free or cost money

thing to remember, linux is not trying to be windows, neither is Mac
they are meant as alternatives to Windows

(don't start a debate of who is copying who)

i test out Ubuntu 9.10 in a Virtual Machine, with virtualbox program
I can have it running full screen on my 2nd LCD, it's quite good to be able to do that with out hooking up a 2nd machine to that LCD

i have nothing against paying for software, i did buy Vista Ultimate, and Office Ultimate (granted office was the $75 Student one from the MS website) and all my games, the rest of it is open source or freeware, Firefox, VLC, msn, xfire, etc etc

This is not a free Linux software thread, it is just listing what are comparable Linux programs to their Windows equivalents.

That is why I mentioned that the programs should be labeled free or not. You will never find a free alternative to Mathematica, Maple, or MatLAB that can do what they can. It just won't happen. But prospective Linux users need to know that they can still get versions of the software for Linux.

I don't see why people are so intent on always getting free software. Where do they expect the software is going to come from? People will just spend their free time making perfect software with no monetary backing? The best software (for high end programs, you know what I mean) is almost always paid for and people deserve to know that Linux has very high quality software written for it and not just some college student's spare time work.

Granted, Linux has many wonderful programs that are free and I use them often. I just feel people need to realize that paying for software isn't a bad thing.

Might want to fix the MS Word alternatives, you have a few duplicates there.

Looks very good though, nice job.

Well, a lot of the programmers who work on the more popular FLOSS programs are being paid, even though the software remains free. How? Because they work for Red Hat, IBM, Intel, Novell, Nokia, Sun, Oracle, Canonical, etc. and these companies make their money in other ways. You don't have to charge for the software itself in order to profit. If that was the case, Mozilla would be out of business.

That said, if every Linux user would donate, say, $20 to their favorite FLOSS development team, we could really increase their desire to keep putting out top quality products.
