Sheesh, read much you guys?. Never said Linux gets bloated over time, which it does but not at the extend Windows does. All I said was that a fresh install of an OS will always behave snappier than an older install. A fresh install of Windows will act faster than an old Windows install, just like a fresh install of a Linux distro will behave faster than an older install.

...then what is your definition of "bloated"? Or are you refering more to disk fragmentation, as a newly installed OS is usually installed on a freshly formatted partition?

Back on topic.

That is where I draw my own conclusion on this issue...
There have been major performance regressions with SQLite and recent Linux kernel versions (2.6.26 through 2.6.28). This was fixed in kernel 2.6.29. However (and ironically enough), there is another major performance regression with SQLite and the new EXT4 filesystem (which was introduced as "stable" in the 2.6.28 kernel). Firefox relies heavily on SQLite databases.

The OP's experience is definitely abnormal.

Java, however, has been seen to perform noticeably faster in Linux.

We did read; the bolded part, however, is more or less false. It may happen, but not to any measurable degree - never has for me, anyways.

The reason is how efficent linux is when it comes to data. Linux is really streamline and is not filled with crap code like windows. Since firefox is also streamlined it too becomes faster. Basically firefox is limitied by the OS it is on. The faster the OS the faster FF is.

Well, after spending a bit more time on my desktop I have to admit it is noticably faster then my athlon build. But only when it seems to hit a stride. Linux firefox just seems to "hang" less, pausing for a second for whatever reason while it decides to display the page. Really interesting to me. Or maybe it is just my imagination, I don't know.

Never happened to me either, although I don't end up keeping one distro installed long enough to bloat :P Although Ubuntu is pretty bloated from the get go.

My cousin uses Gentoo and after 12 years, he has never reinstalled and he has assured me that he has never felt a performance regression either due to software installation or time

Lately I find myself shocked and worried whenever I see my Gentoo box hang for about a half a second but I forgot that such was commonplace in Windows and for much longer time periods if not indefinitely.
