Default So firefox in linux is fast... wicked fast. How come?

I just installed ubuntu 9. something on my 939 athlon 3200+ (single core) system. It has a 80 gig IDE drive, 8800gt, and 2 512mb sticks of memory running at 400mhz with a CAS 2 timings I believe... Still, I find webpages loading faster... much faster then on my sig rig. Yes, really. It obviously can't do anything else faster, but I was wondering what it is about linux, or firefox in linux, or firefox in ubuntu 9.0 for linux, that makes it so snappy?

Just curious

Thanks

Probably getting less usage so the cache and typed urls and history to sift through is smaller.

Maybe... The difference is pretty noticeable though. And I am stuck with firefox 3.0. My desktop and netbook both have 3.5. Same themes and addons too.

I heard something a while ago about the Windows version of Firefox was actually a good deal snappier than the Linux version to do stuff.
Which, honestly, sounds a bit weird considering your scenario

Have you tried 3.5 on Linux?

It is. The Windows version is far more optimized than the Linux version. What is happening in the OP's case I think is due to his Ubuntu installation being rather "fresh" in comparison to his Windows installation. A fresh install of an OS will always act "snappier" than an older one.

For Linux try Swiftfox. It's a processor architecture optimized build of firefox that is otherwise untouched (fully compatible with addons, themes, etc...). You will see some nice gains on that athlon64 (around 10% according to one forum member). http://getswiftfox.com/

I did some research and windows is supposed to be a lot faster. It could be the fresh install that is doing it. I was just genuinely shocked by the difference. Since linux doesn't suffer from winrot I imagine that it will stay snappy. Strange...

Thanks guys. I will try the special linux build, although I am already impressed by the speed.

I've never noticed this with Linux; the performance seems to stay the same no matter how full the installation is loaded with crap.

I'd have to disagree... most Linux distros are not like Windows where things get left behind in the registry/files that bloat the system over time. Most package management systems on Linux are very clean about removing stuff so the OS stays relatively clean without bloat over time.

I have a Fedora desktop that I installed over a year ago and have since upgraded from Fedora 8 to Fedora 10 and the system hasn't gotten bloated over the 12+ months since initial install nor through the upgrade. This is one of the biggest reasons why I like Linux... if I want to know what files were installed by some package, I can find out and I have full control over the system. I don't have to watch some stupid progress bar as I uninstall a program and pray that it will cleanly remove everything it installed and then end up hunting through the registry for leftover garbage.
