Default sound problem

ok i installed Ubuntu 7.10 yesterday upgraded that to 8.04. and i cant adjust the volume. its maxed, and i cant do anything about it seems

i've used the audigy se before...it didn't seem to mix well with pulseaudio. if you can kill pulseaudio you may have better luck. Sry I'm not more descriptive it's been a while since i used that system.
