Why do you people come here, to a thread in the Linux forum, and respond to a question that clearly specifies Linux with "Use Windows"?
Ubuntu can run on pretty much anything, but you should probably try one of the lighter / more customizable options like Arch.

I can't believe you guys are suggesting Windows XP in firstly, a Linux forum, and secondly for a P3. It's like feeding crude oil to a car, it'll be awfully slow.
Try Arch Linux and use LXDE as your DE.

Another recommendation for Arch Linux. I've had XFCE set up under very similar specs, and it ran pretty smooth. LXDE is a much less complete desktop environment in comparison, but also much lighter...

P3's aren't that bad, I'd advise avoiding GNOME & KDE, but other than that you can pick whatever you like! Xubuntu is the easy choice, but others like Arch will run better as they are more streamlined (kinda of like nLite) - but Arch is a much trickier install. I reckon Xubuntu is an easier install than XP! Make sure you go ext4 for a file system, whatever you do.

I suggest vector linux (based on slackware). Installation is easy and reminds me of Fedora installer in several ways. It works well on older systems (and in my experience has few bugs). They have two versions available; light uses fluxbox/jwm and the standard edition uses xfce/lxde.
I have used it on several older machines and it is faster than xubuntu in my experience (and looks better out of the box too). Another feature worth mentioning is the VL control panel which puts most control features in one convenient place. The only downside is that it doesn't support ext4 yet (the next slackware update and subsequent VL release should remedy this). |

Run a netbook or Lite version and it will run with ease.

XP Pro will be awfully slow, especially with so little RAM, but Windows 2000 would be fine. I'm running it on a 300 MHz Celeron laptop, and it's doing fine (aside from some hardware limitations on stuff like flash videos). Windows 2000 would also support wireless cards, as long as they come with a wireless manager, because 2000 does not have one. Of course, few people have Windows 2000 lying around, so Puppy Linux might be your best bet.
