Arch, Slackware, Gentoo, Debian, it basically depends on how much time you want to spend on installation and setting it up... as for window manager, my personal favorite is OpenBox, but it may not be what you're used to. XFCE should be fine too.

__________________Back in the day, I had RedHat (up until just before the Fedora series, so 2.4x kernel) running on dual 1GHz P3 "Coppermine" CPUs with 1GB of RAM. I was running KDE up until version 3 on that system, I think. It ran fine - normal user interaction stuff was responsive enough. I'd say give Xubuntu a try, based on the fact that I'm running Kubuntu 9.04 on this 3.1GHz P4 system (work machine). It's okay - swaps way too much, but it's okay.
