Yeah, that's pretty much your only option.

I had a HD3850 once.... the fan would never even turn on at all while using the FGLRX drivers. I ended up sticking a passive cooling heatsink on it.

You could try this. It's a frontend for Overdrive and it has fan control.

i must say what amazes me of the three i tried, fedora, opensuse and arch, is that arch does an internet install. very nice feature! does arch come with a graphical desktop? couldn't get past the configure stage, trying to install it on my 4GB USB.

thanks for the info so far guys, +reps!

Read the beginners guide wiki. Unfortunately wiki and forums are down right now and have been most of the day. Basically once you finish the net install disc and reboot you have console and have to add users, install alsa, xorg, drivers, and then add xfce or openbox. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide for when it comes back.

When you first install Arch, it has no GUI, but its not too hard to get one installed. Just install graphics drivers, install X, then the GUI of your choosing [Gnome, KDE, etc]. Then just a window manager and your set!
