First off let me say I have no idea if I'm using the term virtual machine correctly.

Have you considered running it in Wine? Usually runs FAR better than in a VM.

@OP WINE is a good option, and in terms of setup, it certainly comes with the least amount of hassle. And you don't need a copy of Windows. If that doesn't work out, then you may want to look into running a VM. VMware Workstation costs money, Sun's VirtualBox doesn't. Both are fairly straight forward to set up, and VB has the "blended desktop" feature, which is very nice. Obviously you'll need a copy of Windows if you go down the VM route.

I don't really know how different it is from VMware workstation, but I have been testing the server version and it works fine, so far.

hehe, forgot about VMware Server, and just like you I don't know how it compares to VMware Workstation. I've used Workstation since the 1.x days.

VMWare server can run VMs as services, so that they can run in the background completely independent of the user that's logged on. VMWare Workstation acts just like any other program, so once you log off it exits. VMWare Workstation can have teams of VMs, where they are all connected to a common virtual LAN so you can create your own virtual network and try stuff out. VMWare server can't. There are a bunch of others but I forget.

Perhaps you should try one of these alternatives for linux:
__________________http://hnb.sourceforge.net/ or http://knowit.sourceforge.net/ But as others have said Wine should work fine if you need OneNote.
