Default Arch with KDE - on a netbook

I'm running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 on my netbook at the moment, but I'd like to swap to KDE, for 1 reason only really - KDevelop. I'm thinking Kubuntu would end in a horrible mess, as it's only an Atom. So I wondered if Arch running KDE would be a feasible option? Effectively the lightest distro this side of LFS, coupled with the heaviest DE (discounting Compiz, but I don't have experience of it really). Would it balance out, and give as good performance as I have now (I really am impressed with UNR)

This might become a moot point, as I'm testing other IDEs on my Virtualbox at the moment, and if I find a good Gnome-based one, I'll go with that on my netbook - just wondered if anyone had any opinions on the lightest distro couple with the heaviest desktop environment!

I wouldn't go for it, last I tried KDE-Arch on my 1000HE it was pretty bogged down by KDE.

The problem is KDE just tanks you, and really raises the load time.

On a 32gb SSD I could boot in under a minute, that was raised to around 2 minutes with KDE to go from complete power down, to bringing up the web and being able to surf.

You might want to consider KDEmod. It's supposed to be a fair bit faster than normal KDE.

As for KDevelop alternatives:
MonoDevelop (C#, Visual Basic.Net, C/C++, Vala)
CodeLite (C/C++)
NetBeans (only support for Java by default, has C/C++ bundle, other bundles for different languages are available as well.)
Eclipse (Same as NetBeans)
Code::Blocks (C/C++ oriented)

is it not possible to install KDevelop? if it's as important to you as you make it sound then you won't mind having all those dependencies installed.

otherwise, i think Arch with KDE might be viable, but you will use some of the nicer things of Ubuntu, like that UNR interface

Yeah, I'm going down the alternatives route. Most of the Python IDEs listed on wiki are awful, Netbeans is up next, but was having issues with getting it to load, so bailed out for the night.

Netbeans? Codeblocks?

I personally use Netbeans.

Of course, a text editor is always possible - but why struggle with indenting and the like when I don't have to. It's been said that programmers are lazy folk, and that's certainly true of me.

Just tried to look that up, I got a page saying that the server is down for maintenance, showing this image:

This is probably old news, but good to know that the guys at Arch like to have a laugh!
