Default A little Linux help needed...

Alright, I'm back to dual booting OpenSUSE 11.1 and I need a little help. I think this must be a problem with the ATI driver, because I never had an issue in the past with Nvidia. Anyway, with the basic built-in driver, everything looked like crap (obviously), but after installing the ATI driver I now have an issue with moving windows around. When dragging a window on the desktop (I'm using KDE 4.1) it takes a bit to redraw, so its not smooth. Also, when viewing web pages in either Konqueror or Firefox, it does the same thing when scrolling down the page.

Basically, I'm not sure if this is a driver problem or a settings problem. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know what files, if any, I need to post to help out. I'm not a complete noob at Linux, but I'm not very experienced either, so keep that in mind.

I'm slightly out of my depth, but do you have to configure X to take the new driver settings? Or does KDE/driver package handle that for you?

Sorry for the delay in response, its been a crazy day. Anyway, X is configured by ATI when you run the install package (I use the driver from ATI's site, I've never had luck with the ATI Repo.)

I didn't set any up, and I tried looking for them (that was my first assumption as well). I'll look again and report back.

Thanks a lot for your help.

OK, desktop effects are definitely disabled. However, I made an error in my original post. Dragging of all windows is definitely affected, however scrolling in the window is only a problem in firefox. Konqueror is actually normal. I'm still trying to find out which window manager I'm using and how to change it.

Edit: OK. I found the easy way to change the Window Manager, but I can't get Compiz started. It keeps failing and falling back to kwin.

Check that the driver is actually being loaded with the fglrxinfo command:

Code:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8673
If it comes back with anything about Mesa then the driver is not installed properly.

Try updating KDE?

Back when I tried KDE 4.1, it was buggy to hell and back - I literally couldn't use it, I had to go for Gnome instead. From 4.2.something onwards, though, it's worked really well - 4.3 should be in the repos already and is very stable for me.

I'll try this later, but I'm fairly certain that's not the problem.

That may be an option, although I was going to wait til 11.2 comes out before messing around too much.
