the xserver is turned off. i turn it off by accident.

If you have a GUI, then the X server is NOT turned off.

You need root privs to edit the xorg file..duh. This was implied knowledge by the mentioning of your previous amendments to the file.

What gonx said with gksu should work correctly. If not, give us more info.
