if you know how to avoid internet nasties, you don't need an antivirus

There aren't many viruses for linux so you should be safe but if you really want it you can get the avast linux version or clam antivirus (just googled those).

I've run Ubuntu for awhile and haven't had any problems internet-based infectious diseases. Some programs that will be useful as protection have been mentioned.
Just be careful where you (no /b lol) and you should be fine.

You don't have to avoid anything. You can surf wherever you want and feel secure on a Linux box. Of course, this doesn't mean you should fall for scams, etc..

You don't need AV for Linux. It is a complete waste of time and resources. There are better things you can do if you are worried about security.. Also see my sig for the AppArmor tutorial.

The only reason you may want AV on a linux install is if you want to scan files before they may come in contact with a windows box, by flash drive, cd, etc.
