i agree with the OP - what's so great about KDE? it's not pretty at all, and applications often seem to crash.. also, it doesn't seem so intuitive and the bottom panel... no...
just no. i was raised on GNOME though but still

If the apps crash, it probably isn't KDE's fault...
KDevelop is awesome though, it's worth the price of admission alone. I SO wish that someone would 'port' it to GNOME using the GTK+ toolkit rather than Qt, so it could run as a native GNOME/Xfce app. That would require a change of pants

Also, I use KDE 4.3.1. Yes, it focuses on eye candy way too much and not enough on configuration and usability but it has Amarok, KMail, KDevelop, and that's about it. But I'd take KDE 4.3 over GNOME anyday. I just don't like GNOME. Give me KDE or XFCE anyday. And if it's the kickoff style menu that you hate, it canbe changed to "classic" with a right mouse click by selecting "Switch To Classic Style Menu" from the dropdown menu.
Overall, there is a lot to love and hate about KDE 4.3. Hopefully much will be fixed in 4.5 but it is not looking good.

After sitting at a Solaris prompt at work all day...I usually enjoy coming back home and using a GUI. A KDE GUI that is

Admittedly, I didn't try customising it, but I hated openSUSE with KDE with a passion. Apart from the start menu clone, I thought everything else was awful! That said, I like KDE under Slackware, and it's good on the Gentoo liveCD too

I think a lot of the issues with KDE 4.x (apart from the more obvious ones) are related to the way it is packaged - which is not KDE's fault. KDE 4.x under OpenSUSE is awful.
__________________I'm currently using KDE 4.2.2 under Ubuntu Jaunty, and it's fine, actually. There's a couple niggly things with it, but on the whole it's great. Also, I reckon the apps are bloody nice - Konqueror less so (as a browser) but KMail is probably the best email client I've ever used - including Thunderbird. Ktorrent, Kopete, Amarok...seamless integration of network resources such as SSH and FTP...the list goes on. I've used GNOME for a while, mostly during the first couple weeks of using this Jaunty install, and it feels...restricted. That's the only word I can find to describe it. I think that, in its present incarnation GNOME is best suited to corporate/front office systems, where the desktop environment itself receives less attention.

I dislike desktop environments in general, but especially KDE. I dislike bloat and abstraction.

I run KDE 4.3.1 on Gentoo linux (installed from weekly stage3, not 2008 GUI installer crap) and I rarely have anything crash and when it does is isn't KDE's fault (yet). And like I said, you can put any panel (toolbar) whereever you want it and you can forgo the Kickoff Launcher and opt for a more traditional menu!

I totally agree with the Fisher Price thing. KDE feels like it's made out of cheap plastic and held together with chewing gum and scotch tape. It feels.........cheap. Is it faster than Gnome? Yeah a little, but Gnome feels solid. By contrast KDE feels so cobbled together.
I really really wish KDE would go away, and quickly, so those developers could put their efforts toward something worthwhile and not this krap. It's ok though, Gnome 3.0 is coming and is gonna rock KDE 4's socks off. XFCE also rocks. "KDE: The Windows Wanabe, ages 3 and up."

If I'm going to go with a DE I'll use GNOME any day of the week. (Add some Compiz-Fusion WM and you got yourself some sexiness). Right now I'm using Openbox WM and loving it. I might try using Compiz-Fusion as my WM here soon though.
