I installed Kubuntu Karmic alpha 5 today after using a lab computer installed with KDE. I was amazed when I tried to search for Qt Designer using the built in search and it actually found something! I did the exact same search on my laptop, which was running gnome and got nothing...
After that I figured I would try it based on that fact alone. Alpha 5 has KDE 4.3 and I just don't get why people like it. Linux is supposed to be about usability and customization, but KDE has neither. Its full of really great ideas, but they are just poorly implemented. Everything seems to be big and flashy, but its painful trying to navigate through the system. Its like I'm using some kind of FisherPrice computer. The start menu looks nice, but they are sacrificing looks for ease of access, and unless you pin everything to your favourites its just plain cumbersome. One of the first things I do when I install Ubuntu is hop on gnome-look and find a new theme. Installing it just involves a drag and drop into appearance. I tried the same thing with kde-look and apparently I have to compile it, which involves manually configuring one of the dependencies... ![]() There is just too much here for it to ever become usable, yet people seem to like it. I find this odd in the extreme coming from the Linux community, because with all of the bloat in 4.3, KDE has almost everything the linux community professes to hate, times 10. On the plus side its super speedy, I hope the Ubuntu Alpha 5 is this fast

I've never been able to "get in the zone" with KDE, it's just uncomfortable for me (despite me allowing ample time to adjust). Gnome and LXDE are my favorite DEs right now. XFCE is okay but Xubuntu's bastardized implementation bloats it to hell.

Been using Gnome on my openSUSE server and I find it much easier than KDE (I think I tried KDE 4.1, and then 4.3, didn't like either of them).

Only KDE I enjoyed for a while, was kdemod. The regular version is just too bloated for me.
gnome/ob or xfce for me.

KDE seemed very convoluted, especially the newest one. Gnome is better imho.

Many people seem to prefer KDEMod or KDE 3.0 - but otherwise I can feel you. KDE4 is bloated to hell and beyond IMO.

My job requires me to use Solaris 8 in KDE. I don't actually like KDE or even UNIX, really.
