I am more than happy to jump on the "I hate Ubuntu" bandwagon with you, at least for a short ride. Today I inadvertently booted into Ubuntu because I had built an Ub. DVD yestereday so that I could eventually check out the installation-less version, at my leisure. But without any indication or warning, the Ubuntu version that ran from my DVD without any user input, wiped the MBR of a 1 TB RAID 5 array, and left me in a real state of panic and worry, for a couple of hours. At least I was able to recreate the array and all the data is intact, so the damage wasn't permanent but it just as well could have been.

I can't consider Ubuntu ready for prime-time in my house if this is the kind of sloppy programming going on, or should I say, sloppy testing, because behavior that blatantly destructive surely deserves a prominent release note or installation advisory, ya think?!

Cheers,

Yes. The live cd will allow you to mount your windows partition and copy files off to an external hdd.

Cheers,
there's no cure for point-and-click users aside from opening of the eyes. Ubuntu won't override the MBR until you try and install GRUB, which comes after you try and partition your HD for installation.

Either that, or you burned a bad disk and just got unlucky.
