I got linux installed on this rig and I would like to use it as my main OS for schooling. But the problem is that I can't get a few things to work and or I want to know if it is compatiable with other files?
__________________I would like to get flash and Java working on it. And Adobe, that is important. And wondering if i can open word docs and excel spread sheets from 2007 on it too?

OpenOffice will handle all your Word/Excel stuff and functions alot like Office 2003.
As for installing Flash 64bit check here

Flash and Java all have Linux versions.
I'll assume that you're using Ubuntu 9.04, seeing as that's what's listed in your OS section. This guide should help you out with installing 64 bit flash player. Although the guide is several months old, it still works for what it's for ![]() (I haven't used 64 bit Ubuntu yet, so I'm not entirely sure on how good it is or if it even works as nicely as it should). This guide should help you out with installing JRE (Java Runtime Environment). Again, not sure on whether or not it works on 64. But it's worth a shot, eh? ![]() As for opening 2007 word and excel docs, just use OOo (OpenOffice.org). Comes preinstalled with Ubuntu. Easily found under the Office section in the Applications menu. Good luck, and anymore questions feel free to ask

Okay, it is really easy to get that stuff to work. Also you can use OpenOffice that is supplied with ubuntu as your office suite
![]() Run the following commands in terminal and it should get you up and running, but you can get the same packages through synaptic if you wanted to but I do not like using it as it takes forever to find thigns using the gui. I just go and use the terminal as you can execute multiple commands a single time(just copy and paste them in): This will install java, flash player and several other things including several codecs: Code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras Code:
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin Code:
wget -c http://packages.medibuntu.org/pool/free/libd/libdvdcss/libdvdcss2_1.2.10-0.2medibuntu1_amd64.deb sudo dpkg -i libdvdcss2_1.2.10-0.2medibuntu1_amd64.deb If you search for "torrent" it will give a torrents that you can use to torrent thigns. Search for music player, you will get a list of music players etc.. Hope that helps out!

First of all:
You're welcome ![]() The Java stuff is behind the scenes... Unless you're trying to use Java for something I'm not thinking of O.o Flash should work... You're using FireFox, correct? Are you getting any error messages when doing any of this stuff? If yes, tell us ![]() How are you shutting it down? Ctrl+Alt+Del will restart your computer, btw. F1-F6 keys will bring up six different terminals, and F7 will give you your GUI back. Maybe you're hitting one of these buttons instead XD

As for Flash, here is how you install it: 1) Click here and download the archive (.tar.gz) file. 2) Right click it and extract it. Then move to the directory where you extracted it. 3) Move the extracted libflashplayer.so file to the following directory: /home/username/.mozilla/plugins. If the plugins directory doesn't exist, just create it. mkdir /home/username/.mozilla/plugins 4) Restart Firefox and you should have flash. Quote:

Alright thanks.
__________________Well, whenever my laptop is plugged in, and I go to shut it down, it shuts down. But then it stays on. It is a blank screen, where if I hit a button it tells me the command of the button, etc. I haven't tried any of the f-# keys though. I should give that a shot next time. It reminds me of the classic screen that PCs had (or the local library had) before the GUI of windows/mac were made. Quote:

Just another question. With Word 2007 and earlier versions, it would check your spelling and grammar as you go. Open office doesn't do this? I've tried enabling it, but it doesn't do anything?
