just installed the latest Ubuntu and installed VLC but I goto play a file and 2 windows come up on screen. I forgot what the option is to make it just 1 window. Could someone shed some light on it please

Tools > Preferences > Classic Look
That's what you want if I'm reading that correctly.

Set it so that it doesn't allow multiple instances of the program running, it's in the preferences somewhere.

hmm, never thought about that, but it would be nice for vlc to not open a new instance every time I open a new video file

As I said, you can set it so that it doesn't do that. As far as I am concerned, that is the default behaviour.

If you're opening a divx file, I think VLC has to do this or it won't work. I think I'm right on this. My VLC only opens two windows when I do that.
