I am sharing a USB External Enclosure on Ubuntu Server with GNOME installed. It loses connection if I try to multitask on the shared drive from another computer running XP. It happens on more then one XP computer both 32 and 64 bit. When I'm listening to music on foobar it just pops up network unreachable. Is there a quota on by default or something? I was using Server 2003 before but it keep getting slower and slower till it barely worked and then I had to restart to fix it. What can I do to fix it? This is a problem I have been having ever time I install Ubuntu I have done it about 3 time now including this one. I don't think I had this problem when I had xUbuntu installed. I think it worked fine when I connected with another Ubuntu computer a while ago.

is perhaps the drive merely going to sleep? some externals are bad for that.

It worked fine on Windows Server 2003 and works fine from USB plugged right in.

Let me get this straight. When you access the USB drive from another computer, the USB drive loses connectivity?

Yes, it says network location no longer available but it reconnects right after that.

It has to be a network problem then. I think when you mount something in Linux it actually mounts the files (or at least some sort of cache) so even if the USB lost connection it shouldn't matter.

Does this also happen locally (ie. just disappear), or only when you access it remotely?

Only remotely and I just read the error and it says it's already in use
so it's not disconnecting.
