@hometoast: Voice chat does not work.
All this is with my sig-rig: Counter-Strike: Source runs at a highly playable 45-60 fps on max settings for me (Actually, that's with Trilinear filtering and no AA). With Team Fortress 2, Day of Defeat:Source, and Garry's Mod, I have to set the dxlevel to 81 if I want a HUD... and set all the settings to Medium (shadows and water effects to Low) if I want any type of playable FPS. Also - in Garry's Mod, the Windows version must be set to Windows 98, or else the game will crash every time there is a prop-death. Sadly, Left 4 Dead isn't even worth running in Wine for me... I'll get maybe 30fps at times, but it stutters constantly, and sometimes even crashes when there is a large amount of zombies on the screen. All of the games from the Goldsrc engine work perfectly, especially in OpenGL rendering mode. (minus voice chat, of course) I still need to try out Unreal Tournament 3 in wine, as I'm starting to see good results in the WineAppDB. I'm also seeing very good results with GTA: San Andreas and World of Warcraft.

It'd be nice if ATi or nVidia produced a native Direct3D driver for Linux which replaced the WINE one or plugged into it somehow. If WINE could remove the Direct3D->OpenGL conversion process, I think 3D performance would improve considerably.

I/O performance is horrible on WINE. It depends on the application of course, but for the most part it's far from adequate. 3D performance also depends on the game, as well as in game stability. Most of my old games work in one way or another; Rome: Total War, Medieval 2: Total War, Fallout 1 & 2 & Tactics, Diablo 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, Temple Of Elemental Evil, Hearts Of Iron, Arcanum, Planescape: Torment. Recently was able to get the Risen demo to work as well (although with some lighting anomalies). It you are a heavy Windows gamer keep a Windows partition handy.

I think I remember playing HL1 pretty decently using Cedega on my old Celeron/Intel onboard computer.

Don't bother, wine sucks for gaming. It's really not worth the trouble. I play HL1 at work, and I use it for office apps and CAD software on my netbook. TBH Wine isn't anywhere near the point it needs to be to ever be considered worth my while for games.
I'm sure some people may disagree, but I just don't have time to play around with all of these hidden dependencies and bugs when I can just dual boot into Vista and be done with it. (well I don't dual boot, I just run Arch on my non-gaming PCs.)

I play Half Life 2 at 3360x1050, 60fps, full everything. No issues.
I play Halo, 60fps, full everything. No issues. I used to play Eve, 3360x1050, 60fps, full settings (that game is far more graphically stressing than you'd expect from an MMO). No issues. I'm on a 9800GT.

Also, HL2 Ep 2 is awesome at 3360x1050. (oh, and mouse input in Halo doesn't work well with Compiz, so I have to use Metacity, but that has nothing to do with wine, and admittedly, we do some wonky things with mouse control in Compiz. I'd know, I used to be a Compiz hacker)
