Half-Life 2 and its mods works fine here. So does Eve.

What I wonder is if I built a sick PC (quadcore, all out) and ran windows in virtualbox how well would gaming work?

Personally, once I build a decent PC, I'll just dual boot...

3D acceleration support under VMs is pretty bad.

WINE also isn't that good. Look up the games you want to play on appdb - they might work very well, so you're sorted. Some games have minor defects, and the rest (anything which isn't very popular or old) work badly or not at all.

It wouldn't work at all. 3D graphics hardly works in VirtualBox, and the entire fact that it has to emulate a separate environment makes it even more slow.
