Default First time Linux user, need some help installing Java

Hi, so I just thought I'd give Linux a try. Installing Ubuntu 9.10 was very easy and straight forward, but now I encountered some problems.

I'm trying to install Java for Ubuntu, I downloaded the .bin version of the file. I followed the instructions and typed su in the terminal, but when I prompt me for the root password, I can't type anything, I can only hit the enter key, then it tells me authentication failed. Am I missing something? I'm using these instructions. http://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml Please help, thanks.

that package isnt for ubuntu
from what i remember, you'll need to convert the rpm package to .deb.
you'll need to install alien

Quote:
sudo apt-get install alien
than change to the directory the .rpm is located

Quote:
sudo alien -k file.rpm
sudo dpkg -i file.deb

just because you don't see anything appear on the screen doesn't mean the keystrokes aren't registering.....

The password isn't echoed on screen, but when you type, it gets the keystrokes.

Thanks for the link. But after reading the guide I'm still confused, can someone post a link on which version of Java will work with Ubuntu?

Thanks for the tip, I tried typing it anyways but it still says authentication failed.

Are there a more noob friendly version of Linux? Ubuntu seems to be pretty advanced, I'd just like be able to web browse and do basic word processing on it. It's not replacing Windows as my primary OS.

You people are making this WAY to difficult.

Code:
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre
Put that into a terminal. (Apps -> Accersories -> Terminal)

When it asks for your password, it won't show that you're typing anything.
Don't worry, this is normal.

Alternatively, you can open up Synaptic and do a search for Java.

Ubuntu is, honestly, as noob friendly as they come.

here's the best answer I can come up with:

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-ins...04-jaunty.html

the only tricky part will be adding the universe and multiverse repos to aptitude, and here's a guide for that:

Not trying to be patronizing here, but you should have two passwords set. Your user password, and your root password. During the install it should have prompted you for your root password. Doing specific things, especially concerning the kernel will require you to either be logged in as root, not really recommended, or become a super user (su command, or sudo if you have it installed). As far as I know, you won't be able to change your root pw unless you know the original one, so reinstalling will be your option.

When you get that resolved, open a terminal and type:

Code:
su -c 'apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-jdk'

or sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-jdk
The first one might not work, I spend all my time in Fedora, and never use sudo. After that, type your root password, which I hope you remember.

The easier way is with Synaptic Package Manager.

Ubuntu is pretty much the most user friendly distro. It is different because of how much more control you have, compared to Win, and all the proprietary stuff that can't be bundled, which you have to install yourself. After that, it should be easy to navigate and learn your way around. If not, always come back here and ask for help. I've spent almost 10 years with Fedora and I still need to ask for help. The site at the bottom of my sig has Ubuntu guides as well, so check those out.

^^ This.

I was about to post the same thing. It kills me when people give these really complicated instructions for how to install something that can easily be installed by just using the repositories.

Thanks for the replies. I used Bluescreen_Of_Death's instructions and they worked.
