I would suggest Fedora 11 or Ubuntu 9.04 (Note: 9.10 comes out in 11 days).

Both are great Distro's with huge support teams, and friendly communities that many members on OCN are familiar with as well, so getting help shouldn't be a problem.

For starters, like tater suggested, give Ubuntu a shot first. If you want to dive even deeper, you can try a distro like Debian.

If you want minimalist, cause even Ubuntu can feel bloated after using one of these, Arch or Gentoo are worth trying.

lm-sensors will allow for monitoring motherboard sensors. I *think* it is already installed. Open up the terminal and type:

Code:
sensors
If you see a read-out it is probably already installed. All you need at this point is a GUI for monitoring.

If you don't see a read-out, then you can try running:

Code:
sudo sensors-detect
from the command terminal. Follow all the prompts and it will set it up for you.

Again, once that is done you will need a GUI front-end that you can place on your desktop. Many people use Conky scripts, but since I am not a Gnome user, I can't help you with that.
