Well I finally decided to build an ubuntu-based multimedia PC from old parts that acts as both an HTPC and a file server for audio and video files. The only thing that I recently bought was a radeon 4650 (Powercolor) for the graphics since I had the intention of channeling audio and video through a single HDMI cable (Native HDMI port on the card....it's not using a DVI->HDMI dongle) to a Sony Bravia HDTV which doubles as the computer's monitor. I don't have a sound system set up as I just want the audio to play through the TV's speakers. I installed the latest fglrx drivers from ATI, and they seem to work fine with one exception.....sound via the HDMI cable only works in some instances. The test beep on the audio configuration works. If I pop in an audio cd, sound plays. If I play a sound file (MP3) it works. What doesn't work, however, are other programs that utilize sound such as SDLmame, or even internet video streaming. Is there any way to fix this sound issue? The other thing that I have done is updated ALSA to the most recent version. Now that I think about it, it might be an error in programs "pointing" to the right driver, but as I'm a complete noob when it comes to this stuff in linux, I have no idea what to do. I'll be more than happy to post outputs of text files in question if need be.
Thanks in advance.

This + see if when using the onboard/sb sound card you can hear the things that you can't on the HDMI.
