I've only briefly used FreeBSD, but I really loved it. Especially Ports.

It feels like everything has been designed with the UNIX-philosophy in mind, at least compared to Linux where its far more varied.

I would really recommend reading this: http://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd...bsd4linux1.php if you are curious about FreeBSD, especially in comparison to Linux.

FreeBSD seems ok, but I never got it working myself - not a noob distro by any stretch! I'd compare it to an Arch install in terms of the challenge

Personally, I'd go with ArchLinux over FreeBSD.

Both use the ports, plus you get the larger community.

There is always bickering between the two communities. Linux Devs say *BSD devs are jerks and vise versa...

Ive used FreeBSD for years as a router/FTP/WEB box. Its not really hard at all i use PF and natd for firewall and routing, GLFTP for my personal ftp and Apache for web junk also use Dyndns for a free host name so when im at work or another persons house i can access my files through web ftp or i can remote in to my home box. I really think you would like FreeBSD ports make it great but updating the ports can be a ***** sometimes.
