Default Which version of Linux can I get?

My Uncle in Virginia wants to install a Linux OS on his computer, which is a pretty old one by the way, so he can get the hang of Linux. Problem is, he only has an optical drive that reads cd-roms. He's missing some drivers for the Red Hat OS he already has, so what is the latest version he could download that can fit on a cd-r?

i know there are ways to get linux running on a machine without it costing you anything.
hope this helps.

You can also request free CD's straight from Ubuntu although it CAN take quite a while. I requested a DVD once and it arrived within the month, so it wasn't too bad.

As far as I know, most all distros will have DVD, CD, and Live options. So if you are looking for a single CD, damn small linux will surely fit. Otherwise, you can burn ~5 CDs for most anything.
*Edit, forgot you can actually install from a Live CD as well. I know this is the case for Fedora at least.

Basically linux will fit on 1 CD. More advanced version (Debian, for instance), will take multiple disks, which you swap out at the prompts during installation.

And why doesn't your uncle just D/L and compile the drivers?

Red Hat = Fedora. (get it? )

If his computer can run Red Hat then it shouldn't have any trouble with an XFCE based distro. I don't think we need to go as far as DSL or Puppy Linux though. If he is just getting the hang of it I would recommend Xubuntu, since I doubt he would be able to install Arch.
