Default Best Linux for Acer Aspire One?

I have the A0751h-1545 Aspire One, and while XP performs decently, I am thinking Linux might be even better. Considering I want to keep the 10+ hour battery life (it even sometimes shows it as 11 hours if I'm only using MS Word), what would be the best Linux distro that is compatible with 100% of the hardware, is faster than XP, and gets amazing battery life?

Note that I stripped down the stock XP install of all the garbage, so it runs much faster already, and I want Linux to be even faster.

I looked at the Ubuntu netbook special distro, but is there anything better?

Thanks

Looks good, but does it support all the hardware? Including the Fn media buttons to change volume from the keyboard, etc?

I tried the Ubuntu netbook remix and it was pretty nice.
I never had it with XP (Just Windows 7) so can't compare it with that. I personally like Windows better, but wanted to play with Ubuntu again. Battery life seems about the same (~6hrs with a 6 cell) for both OS with moderate use.

How did 7 run on it? And did you run it with 1GB ram?

Windows 7 runs just fine with 1 gig. I upgraded to 2 gigs (got a great deal from a member here) and really don't notice much of a difference (but RAM useage did go up some, with 1 gig, I never saw it above ~750-800 mb used, with 2 gigs, I have seen it as high as 1.5 gigs). I am sure there is much less page file useage with 2 gigs though. All I have used it for so far (only had it a few days) is surfing the web and playing around with media center to set it up to watch movies from my HTPC (which it does just fine, even when I hooked it up to my 32" LCD TV @ 1920x1080).

I may put a copy of XP on it just for comparison, but I really like Windows 7 on it.

be warned, you may face lots of issues with putting linux on it.

i say stick with a well documented distro in case this does happen. Ubuntu 9.10 RC is one option, and so is Crunchbang. also try ubuntu 9.10 UNR, and maybe Arch Linux.

also, be sure to use powertop to monitor battery life. i don't think you'll get the same battery life in Ubuntu though. when it comes to battery, XP is king.

On my old laptop, yes and no. Fn Brightness and others were good, but volume needed a quick search/fix through their forums.

Overall I've been happy with it. Looks good (subjective) lite, and quick.

Check this out:

http://www.eeebuntu.org/

It was originally designed for the eeepc but has a netbook kernel option that supports the AA0.

I have been using ubuntu 9.04 NBR on my wife's AA0 and have been happy. The only issues I have had where when I tried the beta of 9.10. It worked great at first. Then after a kernel update wireless crapped out. I tried everything but couldn't get it working again.

I went back to 9.04 and have had no problems since. With 9.04 the only extra thing I had to do to get wireless working was this:

With a working wired connection pull up a terminal.
then type:
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty

when it is done type this:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

then add this:

blacklist ath_hal
blacklist ath_pci
blacklist acer_wmi

Then save the file exit and reboot.

You should have a working wireless connections and everything should work including the wireless led.

Check out this for more info:
