Well I have Arch on all of my PCs except for my gaming rig (sig rig) so I went ahead and installed it last night.
Unfortunately I can't seem to get the drivers configured. I know that the ATI proprietary drivers work with compositing and everything in Chakra (Arch with kdemod preinstalled). There is an option to allow non-free drivers, and this is the only thing that will allow compositing using openGL (as opposed to Xrender) in Chakra. Anyhow, I've tried the following drivers: testing/xf86-video-radeonhd 1.3.0-1 extra/xf86-video-radeonhd 1.2.5-1 extra/xf86-video-ati 6.12.4-1 I use hal for input devices, so I generated xorg.conf.new using: sudo Xorg -configure then removed all of the lines referring to input devices and monitor (according to advice from someone at Arch forums). All I get is a black screen. X works with the standard vesa driver, but obviously I don't want that. If anyone has advice or can post their xorg.conf for a 4870X2 I would be forever indebted to you....I'm growing frustrated to say the least. I've never had to configure X on any of the PCs I've set up with Arch.....hal always takes care of it and the open source drivers for Intel are great. Why the ATI drivers suck so bad is beyond me.

I've never used ATI in Linux before, but I don't know why you're trying to do all of it by hand. (Maybe I'm confused, but I'll tell you how to use the propritary drivers)
Get into a terminal and use yaourt (if you have it, if not I highly recommend it). Code:
yaourt -Sy catalyst Alternatively, you could do a MAKEPKG with them, but that is more work then nessisary IMO. Then you can use aticonfig to modify your Xorg. Hope this helps.

Well you have to configure xorg.conf with the open source drivers with the HD4* series from what I've read, which sucks. I have yaourt installed (use it all the time, I agree it's great), but since xorg-server and some of it's packages updated last night, catalyst-utils won't install.
I downloaded it and built catalyst using makepkg -d but for some reason the tarball download link was dead on the AUR earlier today. I'm going to try it again later tonight and see if I can build it.........hopefull the proprietary one will work.

are you sure you have all the dependencies? because -d makes sure it installs without checking for dependencies, I think you might want to be using
makepkg -s which syncs dependencies and will install anything you that you need. P.S. Slurpy > Yaourt

Yea I have all of the deps. I actually went back and installed it by overriding the deps......not really sure why it wouldn't work earlier. I'm sure I missed something.
Anyhow, I stil can't get this damn thing to work with any xorg, including the working one that I pulled from Chakra. I wonder if the package needs to be updated since the xorg-server update? I'm going to give it a shot sometime tomorrow. Maybe I'll have better luck.

ZOMG Native Linux Client!

I've been hearing some issues related to this on Con Kolivas' IRC channel. I don't remember anyone getting it fixed though, but I believe they were running with the Xserver from [testing] too without trying to go back.

Radeonhd and radeon do not have 3D acceleration for r6xx and newer cards. You will be stuck with using xrender for composition if you keep those drivers. You need to install the proprietary fglrx drivers. Unfortunately AMD doesn't "officially" support Arch and the distro maintainers in their infinite wisdom droped support for the driver because they got pissed off with it (they don't package it anymore, which was the best and usually only way to get the driver working easily). A third party repo still offers the driver though. I don't use Arch so I can't be of much help, but take a look at the Arch wiki if you haven't already.
