Arrow [Guide] Installing Ubuntu 9.10 with Virtual Box

With the great new version of Ubuntu, 9.10 being released I thought it would be a good time for me to write a guide to allow many users to try out this fantastic operating system.

This guide was written with a target audience of users wishing to try Ubuntu and not the users who wish to use it as their primary operating system.

Contents:
What do I need?
Setting up the environment
Installing Ubuntu
FAQs (Coming soon!)

What you will need:
Now that you've got the above items, we can begin!

Setting up the environment
  1. Open VirtualBox and click the 'New' (blue star) button.

  2. A window will now pop up on screen, introducing you to the new virtual machine wizard. Click 'Next'.

  3. You will now need to type in a name for your virtual machine, I've kept mine simple but you can be creative. I have also selected 'Linux' and 'Ubuntu' from the OS type box, this will generate the recommended hardware settings for the distribution; making things much easier for us! When you are done, click 'Next'.

  4. You will now the asked to choose the settings for 'RAM', for inexperienced users, I'd recommend keeping this settings at default. If you know what you're doing feel free to increase the amount of available memory.

  5. Now you are asked for a hard disk selection. As this this a fresh install, I'm creating a new hard disk. Click 'Next' to continue.

  6. A new wizard will pop up on screen afterwards, this wizard is simple to use but I will continue to guide you through the setup. Click 'Next'.

  7. I will be using 'Dynamically expanding storage' because this is the fastest option of setting up a virtual hard disk. Click 'Next'.

  8. Leaving the name of the hard disk at it's default will improve the ease of use. Feel free to change the size of the hard disk to whichever size you feel necessary - I will be leaving my setting to 8GB. Click 'Next'.

  9. The final page is just to conclude which settings you have chosen, click 'Finish' if you're happy with these settings. If not, go back and change them.

  10. The summary window will appear to check whether you are happy with the chosen settings, again, Click 'Finish' if you're happy with them - if not, go back and change them.

  11. Next, double click or select the virtual machine name you have just created, ie 'Ubuntu 9.10' and then click 'Start'.

  12. You need to select the source for installation so VirtualBox will ask for your input, Click 'Next'.

  13. In the bottom group box select 'Image File' or 'Host Drive' if Ubuntu is on a CD, insert the CD and click 'Next'. If you do not have Ubuntu on CD select 'Image File' and then click the small folder icon to the right.

  14. A list of used ISO files will appear and you can select one, if it's not there click the 'Add' button.

  15. Navigate to the file you downloaded and 'Open' it.

  16. The ISO image file will now appear in the list and you can select it, highlight the file in the list and click the 'Select' button.

  17. The Image file will now appear in the drop down box shown earlier, click 'Next' when it's selected in the drop down box to continue the setup.

  18. Once again, you will be presented a summary window to confirm the settings you've selected.

Installing Ubuntu
  1. Finally you can begin installing the actual OS, Ubuntu! The first option you have to choose is the language you want to read it in. Use the arrow keys to select the language and press the Enter/Return key to use it.
  2. You will then be presented a clean looking 'front page', use the arrow keys to select 'Install Ubuntu' and again, press Enter/Return to use this selection.
  3. A great looking loading screen will show up, this just looks much better than Ubuntu 9.04!
  4. The screen resolution of your virtual machine will adjust at times, but don't worry - this is fine. You will see some scary looking text for a brief period of time but this is fine too. Just wait a little longer..
  5. The GUI has arrived! The difficult part of the installation has already been completed, however, I will keep on guiding you in case you are a totally new to the subject. Click 'Forward' when ready.
  6. Choose a time zone that you want Ubuntu to keep it's time functions synchronised with. Click 'Forward'.
  7. Choose your keyboard layout, if unsure - leave it at default and test the keys to ensure you have chosen correctly like I have below. Click 'Forward'.
  8. This page is a little more complex but still easy to use. As we are only going to have Ubuntu on this virtual disk, leave it at default (shown in the picture below) and click 'Forward'.

  9. We can now customise our installation with our name and a password, fill in the boxes with your choice of username and password.
  10. As you can see below, Ubuntu likes to keep us secure - the password I chose; '123123' is suggested as not being secure and recommends that I change it. I will not be using this machine for any personal information so I'm going to click 'Continue' and ignore this warning. I do suggest that you change it to become secure if you will use it as your primary OS.
  11. The final summary window will show to check our preferences, if happy; continue, if not; go back and change what you need to.
  12. Leave the system to install itself, it will take between 15mins-45mins depending on the hardware used. When it's completed, Restart your virtual machine.

  13. Ubuntu wants you to remove the CD from the CD tray if used, if you didn't use a CD then follow the steps below.
  14. Un-mount the CD image file to continue using Ubuntu.
  15. You will see one more fantastic looking loading screen before you can use it.

  16. And... done!

Congratulations! You have successfully installed a new operating system!

Thank you for using my guide and I hope I have been helpful, good luck with Ubuntu 9.10!

looking good, I might fool with ubuntu in a VM, just to see what's new, even though I'm not really a fan of the distro.

Also, I'm not sure if this belongs here, since most users use linux as a primary OS and not windows...

VirtualBox is available for Linux, Windows and Mac so it does belong here as the primary focus is on Ubuntu (the installation).

This guide was written for users to try Ubuntu, not for people who wish to use it as their primary OS.

This is a very nice step by step installation guide. I find ubuntu incredibly easy to install, but i think people who have not used it and want to try it may try it now. Good job! +rep for you! Thanks!
