So apparently I am not able to tether my iPhone to Ubuntu with a wire.
However, if I run Virtual Box 3 with Windows 7 with Ubuntu 9.10 host, will I be able to tether my iPhone to the Windows 7 guest, so that all I would have to do in order to tether is open up Virtual Box Windows 7, and use the internet in Virtual Box? Also, how would my battery life compare on my laptop (ASUS x83vb-x2) going from Windows 7 x64 RTM to Ubuntu 9.10 x86-64? I get about 3.5-4 hours in Windows 7 BTW.

You can do it natively in Ubuntu.
9.10 + wicd + bluetooth manager I know I did it once with AMD+Nvidia's iPhone.

I think you have to jailbreak the iPhone to tether.

I do not need to jailbreak my phone to tether because I am running 3.1.2, and have been able to tether with all my Windows computers, also, I have also tethered to my friend's Macbook.
My cell phone provider (Rogers) allows anyone with more than 1GB bandwidth on their plan to tether free of charge, and because I have 6GB per month, I am allowed to tether with a non-jailbroken iPhone. On a side note, I have got Virtualbox running with Windows 7 guest (Ubuntu 9.10 host), and tethering does seem to work perfectly (in fact, I am tethered right now to test it out ).I made the mistake of installing the OSE version of Virtualbox, so I had to uninstall it and install the standard version. Once I got Windows 7 installed, I installed guest additions (can be done by going in the top of the virtualized Windows 7, under the "Device section", you go to "USB Devices", and then select the iPhone. Then all you need to do is go to the network adapter settings in Windows 7, right clicking the iPhone, going to the Sharing tab and selecting to share the internet from the device. As far as I have tried out, when you plug and unplug the iPhone, you need to reselect it under the "USB Device" section, and then it will connect back into Windows 7. You do not have to go back into the Sharing tab for the iPhone to select the sharing the internet however, as it seems to save that setting. Since I do not tether very often, this is perfect for me, because now I am running Linux on my laptop, and still have the capability to tether when I am in an emergency.
