Can you verify that UFW is inactive? It should be by default but you never know.

here's a long shot
press alt-f2 to open the "run application" window, then type in gconftool -u /desktop/gnome/remote_access/network_interface then click run

It says there is no such directory, but there is a %gconf.xml file in that folder. Another thing is should I restart? This thing has been running a long time and it might need it for remote desktop to start up.
