Ubuntu Remote Desktop can only connect to localhost here is a screenshot. This happens to two of my Ubuntu computers. If I try to connect to it it just says connection was closed.

Do you have Compiz installed and running or advanced effects?? If you do Vino (Ubuntu's remote desktop) will not work..
You could always try more tried and true methods like VNC. Ubuntu has documentation on FreeNX You could also trying using the ip that ifoconfig gives you even though it says localhost only.

I had this problem on my wife's laptop. Drove me batty for hours. In the end it turned out I didn't have the remote desktop service starting at boot.
I pulled up the start up apps menu and clicked the box to allow remote desktop to start at boot. It then worked fine instead of saying local host it gave me my local ip address. If you want to connect from outside your lan network you will need to configure port forwarding in your router and tell the remote desktop which port you want.

He is right vino will not work properly with compiz enabled. It will basically just give you a screen shot of the remote desktop but will not allow you to control the remote desktop properly.

It is set to start up and it still does localhost. Also do you mean Compiz on the server or client? My server does not even have Compiz installed.

I don't think this is your issue. Do you have a firewall setup? When you click on network in places can you see the rest of your home network?

I can see the whole network and every computer that is turned on. Why do I need to forward a port on a LAN?
