Default Ubuntu 9.10

Well, I suppose you could call this a 9.04 rant thread, but really, what I want is to get some light shed on some things:

First off on my list, why did the makers of GRUB have to make it so hard to edit the boot menu? Was the change from menu.lst to grub.cfg & etc/default/grub really necessary? All I wanted to do was swap the default menu option from 9.10 to Win7 [for my fiance] and shorten the timeout from 10 sec to 3. After I edited the grub file, GRUB shat on me. Wouldn't boot, even after I ran the grub-update command. So, until I can figure out how to go back to the legacy grub, I'm sticking with 9.04.

And the other thing that gets me is the new gnome. It seems like the one thing I really liked about Gnome [the ability to customize everything, including the login theme] is the one thing they decide to take away. Everywhere I look, there's no way to customize the login theme aside from changing colors and background images, and that kills GNOME for me. I had the same issue on Arch linux, but thank god for the AUR.

Wasn't part of the linux 'mantra' to not reinvent the wheel? Why are they making things so hard?

It looks like 9.10 has really ticked some users off. As for Grub, I think that's more Ubuntu's fault of how they incorporate it. Fedora uses grub.conf, and has for as long as I remember, and other distros manage grub differently.

Again, Ubuntu had a custom login manager I believe. Fedora uses the most recent Gnome and has never incorporated a custom login manager. Does KDE offer any of those? I've never used KDE.

Sad to see they screwed up a lot of stuff with this release. Although I felt the same about Fedora 10. There was a lot of stuff I hated that was fixed in 11, especially the huge overlap of audio control, alsa and pulse-aduio and all that stuff.

Well I know that the new login scheme has nothing to do with Ubuntu, as the new gdm that was pushed out on Arch did the same thing. But the AUR proved resourceful and I'm running the old one until they fix it.

In my opinion 9.10 is a serious competitor to Windows 7 and OS X Snow Leopard. Any gripes are just people not knowing how to do something, same thing happens with every Ubuntu release. Likewise I know a few people who switched back from Mac to Windows because of Snow Leopard issues.

Once xsplash is a little more mature I have a feeling all of those issues with modifying boot screens will be a thing of the past. We just need to have a little patience.

But isn't one of the Linux 'mantras' to not reinvent the wheel? Why change something that already works? Its obvious that GRUB2 isn't ready for release yet. It doesn't handle RAID1 setups properly [only installs to MBR of the first drive] and the new config system is just..... awkward.

GRUB1 does that too.
The only real reason to switch to GRUB2 is if you need a high-res framebuffered GRUB terminal.

Everythign is run fine for me but I used wubi to install Ubuntu (didn't feel like doing a direct install as it didn't support adding windows 7 to freaking grub :| bastards *stabs ubuntu dev. team in the eye with a rusty spoon and breaks the fingers).

Any idea when the next LTS will be released? A version 10.x perhaps? 8.04 is getting old.

9.10 killed my Linux....did the "Upgrade" it booted, got to grub - and then all hell broke loose. Ends up in a black screen doing nothing. I tried a repair install - but no dice.

Anyone got any advice? Should I just wipe the installation? If so, how do I do that without formatting? Or should I just format and start over?

Not very impressed...there will be no competition to 7 or Mac if upgrades go like mine went.

Forget impressed, I'm actually a bit mad. I would have left it at 9.04, but it looked so enticing - and on the upgrade screen it made it look like you should...if I had any inclination this would have happened I would never have done it.
