Default Ubuntu 64-bit

Thought I'd give my first try at a Linux-based OS. So, I'll be giving Ubuntu a go. I hear alot about it, yet know very little on it. Now, where exactly do I download the 64-bit version of Ubuntu? Their site only has the 32-bit version to download: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download Thanks.

Click "Alternative download options, including Ubuntu installer for Windows" - you can select the 64-bit version there.

I would suggest steering clear of 64 bit Linux for now. Lots of drivers still missing. Go with 32-bit for your first taste of Linux and you'll be much happier.

Also my suggestion is to not run it alongside Windows. You'll just keep going back to Windows because it's what you know. Wipe Windows and install only Linux and you'll learn quickly how to do everything you need to do.

Nothing wrong with 64bit Linux. I run it and nothing is "missing". The biggest hassle with 64bit is when running 32bit applications and said application calls for a certain library, which is easily resolved anyway.

^Seconded, I think most feel 64 is mature enough at this point and relatively painless. The only thing I had issue with since 8.10 is with a realvnc control that is 32 bit but a simple dpkg --force-architecture is all it takes.

Worse case scenario is that you will learn something

what

You know... because Linux is open source, you can compile it with x86_64 support fairly easy. The amount of supported drivers for x86 is equal to the amount of supported drivers for x86_64, EXCEPT for proprietary drivers.

What Melcar said sums x86_64 up. That is the only problem I've been having with x86_64, and it's also why I moved to x86 (not to mention that compiling x86 programs - ie. WINE - under x86_64 is highly troublesome)
