You can see my sig rig isn't very powerful, so I can not play games. Since I can not play games, Windows 7 is useless to me. Because of this, I have been wanting to try Linux. Could anyone recommend a distro that's easy to learn and good for newbs from Windows?

ZOMG Native Linux Client!

If you're looking to waste some time, and not just switch so that you can switch, getting something more intensive like Arch Linux would probably be a good idea. Gentoo isn't that bad of an idea either, but considering your E2140 is still only stock, it's probably not the best thing you could go for.

I recommend Ubuntu or Linux Mint if you're wanting to try Linux.
However, Windows 7 is not useless to you if you cannot play games... Windows 7 has made multitasking a pleasure for me.

If you want a nice easy transition but want to learn a bit, (x/k)ubuntu are great choices, LinuxMint is great as well, it is very similar to Xubuntu in many ways but has a great feel to it.
OpenSuSE has always been good to me, but can be taxing on some lower end systems. Slackware has always been my #1 favorite. If you decide to go with slack, you will learn quite a bit while still maintaining an easy install process. Arch and Gentoo can be great too, like gonX said, though harder to install and setup IMO. So for a first timer, just go see what really is going on in a linux environment, I'd go with Ubuntu, then you can always try something else whenever you want, welcome to OSS .

Ubuntu/Mint - will give you the 'taste' of linux, so you can see if you like it. You'd learn a lot here before you dive into something greater. Maybe after a few months you could then switch to something more "intense".
Debian - This is basically Ubuntu/Mint without all the pre-setup crap. You get to build everything from scratch. Great learning experience if you think you'd struggle by switching to a complete different distro. ---------------- Fedora - Ubuntu is to Debian as Fedora is to Red Hat. Fedora is going to be a bit different from Ubuntu, because its red hat based. Lots of people (including myself) don't like red hat based distros, because they do some unnecessary things that just seem to go out of the way to confuse you. But I'm pretty sure the statistic still remains that majority of linux users are running red-hat based distros (Don't quote me on that) ---------------- Arch/Gentoo - These are my favorite. You have to build everything from the ground up. I prefer arch because it still has binary packages, but gentoo uses the portage system and you have to basically compile everything. This might be a nice read: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_vs_Others ----------------- Plus check out this link: http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

If you are going from windows, i would recomend an operating system based off the KDE desktop envoirment. http://www.kubuntu.org/ is a good way to get from windows to linux. It is still ubuntu at its core, but uses a GUI more similar to windows.
