Xubuntu is the lightest of the distros mentions so far.

However check out this thread:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1280189

It will show you how to install ubuntu 9.10 and use enlightenment as your desktop.

I have used xubuntu 9.04 for some time on a computer I use as my htpc.

It is a p4 1.6ghz with 512mb of ram. It has worked good on this system.

After reading the above thread I did an enlightenment install and have been very pleased. My boot times have been cut in half. It boots almost as fast as my sig rig. Enlightenment looks awesome. It looks so much better than xubuntu. It is highly configurable. I could never get cairo dock to work very well before with xubuntu on this pc. Enlightenment has its own launcher built in.

This thread here :

Will show you how to network with your other pcs.

This setup is awesome on older hardware. It allows you to have a modern look while not using very many resources.

Crunchbang linux is basically ubuntu with the pre-configured openbox DE. So it should be lighter than any of the distros mentioned here.

correct me if im wrong though

Check out these threads too:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1155961

http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?is...090504#feature

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal

These show how to do a minimal ubuntu install using gnome or xfce the one I put in my post before was with enlightenment.

The key thing is a minimal install.

A standard install with ubuntu or xubuntu or really any distro is going to include a lot of things you don't need. This doesn't matter if you are using a newer system. When you are dealing with older hardware for best performance you want to do a minimal install to conserve your limited resources.

You should look at some screen shots of enlightenment I think you will love the way it looks.

Boydyboyd made a good point. I would check out crunchbang, it may suit your needs.

Is there anyway to disable startup sounds on ubuntu? They're really annoying.

EDIT: I'm gonna try that light install/enlightenment thing.
