You just need to punch a hole out (dremel, jigsaw, steel cutter). It's very easy, it doesn't have to be perfect by any means, as you'll just sand down the rough edges and then trim will hide how unstraight it is (like some of my trim is pushed on tight, some if it is loose, although my lines weren't that bad). Use lots of painters tape, what I did was put painters tape all over the front so I could sort of draw out what I wanted, then I put a ton of painters tape on the back and transferred the image. Cut with jigsaw. Then, put trim on, and then tape a bigger piece of acrylic behind the board (the other side is not very pretty but doesn't need to be).
Yea a case with a window like that for $100 would also use cheap plastic and the window would look like crap in real life. You might be lucky if you spend $150+ and get an extruded acrylic, which looks like crap too. My window looks like glass, a good window should really look like glass. You can even use glass if you'd like, it's just acrylic is easier to work with and more portable.
