just curious, but Leopard is a 64 bit OS, right? the reason why im asking is because i have a Macbook which was the generation before Santa Rosa and Leopard sees 4gb of mem, but is it actually utilizing all of it?
apple website says 2gb max, but leopard sees all 4 gb in system info. thanks!

The RAM I believe is 3.25GB or something. I think you have the same model as Marin and I; ask him; he has maxed out his RAM. I run 2GB + 512MB.

![]() also, while im here: is there a way to shrink a partition? i want to shrink my main partition by 10-15gb so i can install ubuntu instead of having to run it via parallels. thanks!

Btw, you will have to use rEFIt to tweak your bootloader, since Linux expects a BIOS and not an EFI. I've never gone through the process first-hand, so I recommend that you read up on it instead of taking advice from myself, one who hasn't had the experience.

Nice. Just one question, though: why not Leopard?

Didn't come with leopard, and it was hard enough to get my dad to buy the MBP. I got mine for 1400 on clearance, its last gen model, but still powerful. Also, I heard from my cousin the only differences I'll notice right now are no *official* bootcamp, spaces, couple other things. I heard somewhere that licences for leopard are for 5 computers, so if thats true I hope he buys a copy for him..and me.

Tiger is a great OS. It's probably more stable than Leopard, although I haven't had any problems with the latter since upgrading to the 10.5.2 service pack. You won't be able to install Bootcamp on Tiger after Jan 31 2008 I think (which has already passed). But I heard that you can just roll back the time on your system's clock and then install it. As for Spaces - it's handy, but it's not a huge deal. It's quite inferior to Linux's Workspaces. Time Machine is also handy, but if you ask me, Carbon Copy Cloner is more comprehensive as a backup utility. With the latter, you can make a bootable clone of your HDD, or you can make a disk image of your HDD which can easily be cloned back to your main HDD in case of failure, giving you back your system exactly as you had it before. With CCC, there is also the option to do an incremental backup, so it will just back up anything that was changed since your last backup. I highly recommend this application. And last but not least, I think Tiger looks better than Leopard lol I don't think you're missing much. Anyway, as for the family license: it's $200 for 5 licenses. Technically speaking, the computers are supposed to be in the same house for the licenses to be valid. However, the family license is actually the same disk as the single retail license. It's funny because the EULA says, "If this is a single license pack, these rules apply: [blah blah blah]. If this is a family license, these rules apply: [blah blah blah]." So really, it's basically an honor system, considering the fact that there isn't even a CD key.
