What sorts of applications (architectural, mechanical, etc.) will you be using this for? If just for visual models, google scketchup is great and free.

Like designing PC cases, I've made loads of drawings, but CAD looks much easier to compile everything into something that people can learn to love (so to speak)

google sketchup, its the unofficial standard here on OCN for sharing case ideas.

Sketch-up is the way to go I'd say. There are quite a few sketch-up users here and there are many pre made computer parts you can throw in your designs. Many people suggest using the online tutorials to get started but I'm sure you can find some great help in this section as well.
