Default Macbook HD upgrade

Currently has a Hitachi HTS543212L9SA02 with <10GB free..

I have a nice, fast Hitachi 320GB sitting unused right now -
(a) is there an Apple tool for moving the image to a new drive, and do I do this *before* I open it up (i.e. connect via USB? I have a 2.5" USB enclosure), &
(b) how easy is it to physically crack into the case to switch it out?

Thx!

And it depends on which MacBook you have. With the plastic macbooks all you do is...

1. Remove the battery
2. Remove the metal liner
3. Pull out the HDD
4. Remove the tray and put it onto the new HDD

+1 for Carbon Copy Cloner.

I've done this a couple times, once by choice, twice because the old drive failed (ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR DATA!!!). Marin's got the instructions right. Installing a new hard drive in a MacBook is almost trivially easy.

.. cloning ..

re: time machine - how do I boot to the new drive to start the restore process? ccc is making the new drive bootable, so once it's installed, I'm done!

I wish Time Machine would find my NAS device (WD WorldBook, it's a Mac issue - covered in another thread).. that's why I bought the darned thing!!!

well since you are making it bootable you wont need it, but you would back up to an external, pop in the hdd and the boot cd, hold down the c key (i believe), and choose restore from back up

.. that assumes my system came with a CD (or DVD) - it didn't, and I didn't see any way to create one ..
