Default CPU Upgrade in iMac?

Hey guys,

So i was thinking, would it be possible to swap the CPU in my iMac for some kind of quad core/more powerful cpu? I used CPU-X and it identified my cpu as Core 2 Extreme X7900 socket 775. What reasons are there for this not working?

Oli

I wouldn't think so. Apple don't like you doing anything with their products without you paying them a lot of money to do so.

Try it with a regular 775 chip first, tell us how it goes.

G'luck.

I don't think so. I don't think you can upgrade CPUs in iMac without Apple going up against you.

The X7900 isn't a 775 chip; it's a mobile chip. Thus, I doubt you'll be able to upgrade it.

EDIT: Yes, you can upgrade parts in Macs without Apple getting pissed off. I upgraded the RAM and hard-drive in my Macbook, and it's still under warranty, and I didn't need to pay Apple a ridiculous amount of money.

You can remove the CPU but there's no telling what CPU's the board does and doesn't support.

what can apple do about it? sure they will screw my warranty, but i plan to do it after my warranty goes out.

yes it is socket 775, cpu-x says so.

I just found this: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=221112 not sure if its real or not, but it shows its possible to do it.

Are there any mobile quad core chips?

It's obviously not LGA 755 based off of the pic and the fact that the CPU is a mobile chip.

And what can Apple do about it? Nothing, except for the fact that there's no telling what CPU's the board does and doesn't support.

CPU-X is wrong then; it's not a 775. From that thread, it looks to be possible to replace it, but the X7900 is the best CPU for that mobile socket.

i have id'd the socket type, it's socket M. I'm now searching to see what the best mobile cpu socket m can take.

I found this: http://www.maclife.com/article/creat..._duo_processor

It is definately possible to swap the CPU.

It should have been evident from my first link that the CPU was removable.

And I'll repeat myself yet again. There's no telling what CPU's the board does and doesn't support.
