Considering this is a very nice guide, I've decided that making it stuck was a good idea

Sounds like your mac is not capable of running the 64 bit kernel. This doesn't mean you can't run 64 bit applications.

That is very odd. I too updated and it remained to default at 64 bits. Good luck in finding the problem. Maybe do a manual download and reinstall 10.6.1?

Quick bump for some information: this didn't work on my Macbook, even though it said EFI64 was available. In addition, to check whether it works, you need to check kernel_task (PID 0) to see if it's running as a 64-bit process. The line in System Profiler - 64-bit Kernel and Extensions - is in my experience entirely accurate.

Finally, running the kernel as 64-bit has no functional or performance improvements, mostly just an OCD improvement.

Quick bump as well, and the quoted text above is 100% true. Although my MacBook is running a 64-bit EFI, the kernel is still booted in 32-bit. From my understanding, there is a restriction that Apple has put in place on numerous MacBooks.

Also, like said above, there is little to no improved performance, other than your kernel being 64-bit, and even without a 32-bit kernel, I can still run all 32 and 64-bit applications and services.
