For Snow Leopard, does one have to reformat and reinstall the entire OS? Or is it just an upgrade install w/in the OS itself. Also, any real perks of installing Snow Leopard, other than the 64-bit kernel?
Thanks

Yes, you only have an upgrade option, or at least that is what was in the latest beta version.
__________________The Finder and Expose effects are completely amazing, Quicktime X is pretty awesome too. Safari 4 in snow leopard has a plugin crash detection system so if a plugin crashes, it doesnt crash the whole browser. And there is a bunch of other small upgrades.

You can do either. If you put the disk in and reboot from the disk and install it is just an upgrade and does not change or erase anything. If you want to do a fresh install you have to open disk utility and format the disk and then install. But make sure to do a TM backup first!

I actually asked an apple genius this last month. He said it just an upgrade and you dont have to reformat. Although you do have the option I dont know if it would be something I would do unless Im selling my unit.

Like Vostro said, if you reboot with the disk in the drive and use that method, you can do a fresh install if you want.
However, for me, I simply burned the ISO to a DVD-DL, and and the disk was mounted, and I clicked "Install Mac OS X", which automatically showed my Leopard drive, and began the updating procedure. Also, there are many threads created and information online regarding the update to Snow Leopard and what has changed. I suggest you search a little bit instead of making everyone once again answer the same question over here. I don't mean it as a rude response at all, but there is a reason that we ask for people to search before asking questions that have already been answered. I will say the main update for me is the Finder/Expose updates, as well as Safari 4 and the 64-bit kernel. Also, battery life on my MacBook 5,2 is extremely improved, and boot up time for me is quite quicker.

Halifax is dead on. Snow Leopard is great so far and make sure to read his guide about running in 64-Bit Kernel. I have been using Snow Leopard for a month or so now and love it. Everything is better, faster, and improved.

To me, going from Leopard to Snow Leopard is just as large of an update of going from Tiger to Leopard, and it's only $29. That's how large of an update it is to me.
