Buying a Mac tomorrow. Two macs to be exact. A 13" MBP for school, and a 24" iMac 2.66 for home.
I know the different between the two is negligible, but I like having a desktop, along with having a computer for my girlfriend to play the Sims 3 on. Anyways, right now I have about 500GB of video on my current desktop sig rig. I'm wondering how reasonable it would be to transfer that data over through a crossover cable. I don't have any external hard drives, nor do I have an external enclosure to put my current tb drive in. If it's going to take an absurd amount of time (more than overnight), I'll just go buy a external hard drive from best buy to "test" for a day. |

it should be done over night if you're using a gigabit on both machines. but it faster with external drive.

No it won't. Copying it from one computer to the hard drive, then from the hard drive to the other computer will take much more time than if he just plugged in an ethernet cable and dragged what he wants from one computer to the other.

Assuming both have Gb ethernet, a crossover will work. Is your router Gb-e? If so, you can just plug them both in. You will have to share the folders on your current desktop in order to access them.
How are you currently making backups if you don't have an external drive? ..a
