For the software.

Security isn't an issue on either platform, at least not if you know what you're doing.

Both windows and macs have their uses, and what is done better on which. People usually just hate on macs because the hardware itself is overpriced without taking the software into consideration.

Why do people run Windows? Linux?

It's preference, mainly. OS X is a fantastic operating system, and is targeted heavily by a lot of companies, specifically in the Video and Music industry.

I use my MacBook for Final Cut Pro as well as Logic Studio and GarageBand for music.

It is also a very fantastic OS, and the machine may not be top notch according to hardware standards, but they are gorgeous to not only look at, but to also use.

There is also little to no spyware or virus problems to worry about. There are bugs, and they are usually fixed promptly, but it is overall a very secure system.

Also, every Mac machine with an Intel CPU is able to use Boot Camp to install Windows natively on the same hardware.

I am currently on Windows 7 Professional on my MacBook and it runs flawlessly. A simple reboot without holding Command and I'm back in OS X.

It is the best of both worlds, and if you justify the price for satisfaction of both worlds, you will be immensely happy.

Take my dad as example. I built him a PC, he has a problem with it (I'm 200 miles away from him). He can't fix it himself, he runs to the store and buys a Mac.

Simply because he thinks it's better quality. And his neighbour, who knows absolutely nothing about hardware, talked him into it.

You can imagine how pissed off I was.

Has his mac had any problems lately? If not, then maybe the purchase was worth the lack of a hassle to him.

People that don't like to tinker as much would run a Mac. Excellent customer support, and generally, "It just works". It also has some intuitive software in an appealing overall package. Personally, I'm forced to run OSX almost every day, and I despise it. I've seen a lot of fatal crashes on OSX, a lot of stop errors, etc.

However, I love my iPod Touch, and happily use it every day.

People in the music industry use macs for Logic Studio - one of the most advanced pieces of audio software in existence. It is also one of the most popular, if not the most.

Photographers use it because of Aperture (the program not the camera feature) and its seamless integration with the operating system (mail, iCal etc). It can also very easily run on a laptop making it a portable program.

Amateur home computer users have them for mainly simplicity. They ARE very simple to use, and there are LESS viruses for them (i didn't say none). They are also perfect for beginners since they are out of the box perfect. Since the operating system has also been designed to run seamlessly on the apple machines, you hardly ever get issues of compatibility in terms of hardware. It is also very easy for apple to keep OSX up to date with hardware, unlike on windows where it can take a while to get drivers etc.

I beleive alot of people like people on OCN don't like macs because they are different, and in a way that is not suited to them. A recording engineer does not give a flying fork about how overclocked his system is, or about how he can put a pretty window in his computer to make it looks fancy. He just wants to be able to record and mix and digitally edit music. Macs fill this zone very well sine the Mac Pro really is a power house above alot of computers people have on this forum, and for a recording studio, the price tag does not matter in the slightest. The iMac is perfect for photographers since it is semi portable so can very easily be taken to a photo shoot in a mansion or something since it has a huge 24" screen built into the computer. This beats a laptop hands down because you can see the photos you are taking on a large scale and can see imperfections etc much clear. A macbook pro suites a business person very well since it is strong, looks posh (unlike the thinkpads which are dam resistent but a little ugly) which is necessary for a businessman's look and has features such as integration of the calendar, mail, address book, office etc. Also has inbuilt features for video conferencing. A mac mini is perfect for a family computer since it is very low maintenence, very low footprint and very simple to use. It is also hard to break! (trust me i have tried). They also make great loo roll holders if you ever manage to break one...

There are loads of situations where macs are perfect. You just have to have an open mind, and see that macs are essentially identical to PCs. A better way to phrase your question would have been 'why do people run OSX', since a mac is just a normal PC.

Finally! Someone really answered the question, backing it up with evidence, rather than unorganized stories lathered with their own doltishness.

Sorry, just a little vent, I'm not much help in answering the question as I'm really not productive with my computers. Someday perhaps I'll take up a career involving computing productivity but for now I'm just a high school student with a little hobby.
